Saved By The Bell: Where Are They Now?

Saved by the Bell was only on four seasons, but was able to make a huge dent in pop culture and my life. Every chance I get I tune into those retro reruns on basic cable of the show that took the key principles, trails and tales of high school and transformed them into half hours of delight. It wasn’t just the concept of the show that has kept generations of youngsters in love, but the characters as well. They were adolescent clichés people could define their selves as; nerd, jock, brain, popular, bad boy.  And that mixed with the lessons and an amazing theme song, is why we continue to adore and support the show and the people who brought it to life. So after almost two decades (you feel old?) it’s nice to see most of the Saved by the Bell cast getting work, so with the love of my life, Zack Morris, also known by his given name, Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s new show coming to TNT this week, we’re catching up with the rest of Bayside alumni. And no matter if they’re becoming the world’s next best host, or rocking white collars, one thing remains true…I won’t be happy until I get a true Saved by the Bell reunion.

Zack Morris; Mark-Paul Gosselaar
A top contender for the most admirable bad boy, Mark-Paul will never shake the “Zack Morris” label as far as I’m concerned. But since growing up and ditching the bleached hair and over the top cell, it seems the rebel took a turn. Mark-Paul has leaned towards numerous shows involving being on the good side of the law; NYPD Blue and Raising the Bar. And that trend doesn’t stop because on June 1 he teams up with Breckin Meyer  for Franklin & Bash, a comedic take on the courtroom.

Kelly Kapowski; Tiffani (Amber) Thiessen
What girl didn’t hope to be Kelly? She ultimately landed Zack Morris and then went on to get Dylan in 90210. Tiffani, you are my idol just for that, but when the teen shows died. She grew up, dropped the Amber and had some sort lived success with Fastlane and What About Brian. Hey, I said some sort. However, today she is going strong on basic cable with USA’s White Collar starring Matt Bomer. Really Tiffani, really? In my next life I hope to come back as her.

AC Slater; Mario Lopez
One of the many men of Bayside to fight for Kelly’s love was AC Slater, but today it seems everyone is fighting for Mario’s time. The definition of “beefcake” rode the soap train for a while on The Bold and the Beautiful, and then rode a bike on Pacific Blue, but in this decade he’s taken on a role that could give Ryan Seacrest a run for his money. Not only is he still hosting MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew but took the reins from Mark McGrath and has been hosting Extra since 2007.

Jessie Spano; Elizabeth Berkley
Even though she was AC’s second choice, this “hot mama” proved brains could be beautiful and sexy. No one can forget her role in Showgirls where she bared more than test scores. Later she tried her hand at hosting like Mario on Bravo’s Step It Up and Dance and then played the straight and narrow in The L Word. She should’ve started playing  for the other team because the last thing she did was play an ex of David Caruso on CSI Miami back in 2009. You’d think the brain could’ve thought of a way to keep the roles coming…But even though the roles aren’t piling in, she is in talks with MTV about doing a show that sheds a positive light on self-help.

Screech Powers; Dustin Diamond
The other smarty pants on the show, Screech was nothing less of a dork and we’re all still trying to figure out why he was even a part of their crew in the first place. Not many notable things came after he finally retired his Screech character in 2000 when Saved by the Bell: The New Class said goodbye. Dustin milked his 90’s claim to fame for a while on reality TV boxing Ron Palillo on Celebrity Boxing and making the world hate him on Celebrity Fit Club. Since VH1 doesn’t have anything coming up, it seems Tetherball: The Movie (is this another Dodgeball?) and Little Creeps are the only things Dustin has on his plate. So is it safe to say the best thing he’s done since being Screech has been that sex tape? Oh god no!

Lisa Turtle; Lark Voorhies
Here’s my girl. Lisa brought color to Bayside, was fashion forward and remains the one girl Screech will forever yearn for. So when she didn’t go on to college with part of her crew, I was sad to see her join the Daytime roster on shows like Days of Our Lives and The Bold and the Beautiful (do they take anyone from SBTB?). Why? Because I was a kid and ditching school to watch Lisa wasn’t an acceptable absence according to school officials. Then she joined a cascade of UPN shows, one being In the House with LL Cool J. Well, we all know what happened with UPN, so since the CW turned into the front of the bus in the 50’s, Lark has been doing a lot of the same things as her once stalker. She lended her voice to Robot Chicken and will be starring alongside Dustin in the horror comedy, Little Creeps next year.

Mr. Richard Belding; Dennis Haskins
Last but certainly not least, Mr. Belding. He wasn’t as profound in the knowledge department as say Mr. Feeny, but we loved him just the same. Like Screech, Mr. Belding knew his niche and stayed on to run Bayside up until Saved by the Bell: The New Class graduated. Since then he’s popped up in a familiar place, The Bold and the Beautiful, Robot Chicken and played a supposed sex offender on the wonderful It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Along with hanging with reality stars (I seen him with hanging in the VIP area of the Key Club with Audrina Patridge), he’s looking to become one. As of January, Mr. Belding was campaigning to be on the next Dancing with the Stars. Not only a man of the dance, but song too, he made a “career” out of karaoke. It seems he’s the main cast member not embarrassed at all by his SBTB past…he recently went on the “Spring Break with Mr. Belding Tour!” Yeah, that’s not weird at all…
