Look around my apartment and you’ll see a guitar with a Power Ranger sticker next to a Dylan McKay puzzle. On the desk you’ll find autographs ranging from a Mighty Ducks VHS to a Goosebumps book. This is just 1% of my existence. It’d be an understatement to say the 90’s is something I like. And it seems to be that the world is finally realizing the 90’s aren’t just a thing of the past, but a major part of pop culture.
With Beavis and Butthead making a return to MTV (without the major part of the M) and TeenNick finally taking into consideration all the pleas via sites and petitions and letting their 90’s lineups shine once again, it makes one wonder why the sudden boom in 90’s nostalgia? My personal answer is current programming for kids and teens just blows a big one.
Really MTV? Jersey Shore instead of TRL after school? And It’s appreciated that Awkward is trying to garner that “oh my god, why me” of teenage years, but Daria did it better. As for Nickelodeon…What they have is good. Hell, I’ll be the first to admit that I love Victorious and iCarly, but that’s all they have. Nick has a handful of shows on repeat all day, where’s the variety? So personally I think they’re bringing the 90’s back because bottom line, the shows of today can’t even stand up to what came before.
Logistically why are these shows back? Money. How old are the people who tuned in every Saturday night to SNICK? They’re old enough to buy these now retro shows on DVD box sets, the somewhat (but not really) vintage T’s from Hot Topic, and most of all…they have kids of their own that they can turn onto these shows. And if the kids’ of the 90’s generation kids like what they see I’m sure Hasbro and Playskool will be quick to distribute some Rugrats toys.
This brings up the question, will other networks start jumping on this bandwagon? Facebooks popped up instantly begging for Disney to follow Nick’s lead and return to a time that was less about secret pop stars and wizards and more about Fast Forward (Ben Foster before Blockbusters) and Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers. TeenNick’s “The 90’s Are All That’s” Facebook garners many comments about favorite Nick shows, but there’s even mention of NBC’s TNBC that had City Guys and Hang Time. So networks who didn’t notice the ratings for the first night of TeenNicks 90’s revival, it was huge and it’d be wise to buy a ticket and hop onboard.
So whether it’s because 90’s programming was just better in every way; well written, hilarious, real…Or because Nick and MTV seen dollar signs in the 90’s, who cares? Let’s enjoy this while it lasts and they go back to regularly scheduled programming.
