Previously, on The Vampire Diaries: Stefan stole four coffins from Klaus, but they only know of three of the originals – they can’t open the fourth coffin. Klaus compelled Tyler to bite Caroline – a death sentence – but then Klaus cured her. Stefan almost killed Elena in order to get Klaus to get his hybrids out of Mystic Falls.

The episode opens with Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) in a graveyard looking at the graves of her relatives. There’s a coffin just sitting in the graveyard, and as she tries to open it Klaus attacks her. Suddenly she’s stuck inside of a coffin. She tries a spell to open the coffin, but it doesn’t work. Finally, someone opens the coffin but you can’t see who it is.

It’s obviously a dream, and Bonnie tells Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) that she’s been having it for days now. She’s showing Elena the coffins of Klaus’ relatives, the originals, and Elena can’t believe they’ve all been keeping the location a secret from her. Bonnie says they think whatever is in the fourth, unopenable, coffin is the key to killing Klaus (Joseph Morgan).

Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) walks in and is pissed that Elena’s there. Elena asks if Stefan is going to kidnap her to keep from telling, and he says not to tempt him. God he’s such an asshole now. Bonnie says she thinks she knows who can help her open the coffin and needs Elena to help her find them – it’s Bonnie’s mother!

Elena and Bonnie are at Elena’s house looking for information on every single Abby Bennett in the country. Bonnie says it’s surreal having to track down a woman who bailed on her own kid, and Elena says she should just let Stefan obsess over the fourth coffin. Bonnie says that the coffin is sealed shut with a spell, so that makes it a witch problem.

Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) comes in with information on Bonnie’s mother. He has used compulsion to find her, and now he wants to go on a road trip to go see her. Road trip!! Woooo! Except Elena says he can’t come because Bonnie hasn’t seen her mom in over 15 years, and they don’t need his snarky commentary narrating the experience. They have a moment and Bonnie’s like, hey, I’m right here, what’s going on with you two? Damon said they kissed and now it’s weird…I love his snarky commentary, he can snarkily comment on me any day.

Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) walks into her house and Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) is there. He says he’s there to apologize and she says they’re way beyond apologies. Tyler had Caroline’s mom call her dad because her dad is able to resist compulsion and Tyler wants to learn how to resist his sire bond.

Over at the Mystic Grill Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis) and Dr. Meredith Fell are having lunch. She has to leave to go back to being a doctor and he asks her out to dinner. Damon comes in and asks what’s wrong with her. Because she’s beautiful and a doctor, so there must be something wrong with her. Alaric says her ex called her a psycho case, and Damon says exes don’t count. Damon also kind of makes fun of Alaric because all of his exes are dead, and I was like, awwwwkwarrrrrd… Alaric mentions that Dr. Fell’s ex is the medical examiner, and Damon tells him that he was staked to death.

Stefan walks into his house and Klaus is sitting inside listening to the Black Keys and drinking – I like to do that too! – vampire/werewolf hybrids, they’re just like us! Klaus says that his hybrids have left town, so now he wants to know what to do to get his family back. Stefan says Klaus should leave Mystic Falls, call him in a few years, and then they’ll talk. Klaus asks how the “crazy Stefan” thing is working out for him.

Elena and Bonnie are road trippin’ and Bonnie wants to talk about the kiss between Elena and Damon. Elena says it’s never going to happen again. Stefan calls Bonnie and Elena answers. He wants to know where they are and she lies and says they’re spending the night at the lake house while they wait for Sheriff Forbes to give them more leads on Bonnie’s mom. He says they need to move faster because Klaus is getting antsy. It turns out Stefan is calling them from Elena’s house and he already knows that they’ve found Bonnie’s mom.

Klaus is over at the Mystic Grill talking to one of his hybrids on the phone. Klaus asks if he’s clear on what he needs to do and the hybrid says he’s got it covered. The hybrid goes up to a house and Abby Bennett answers. And….commercial break!

Elena and Bonnie show up at the house and a random guy walks up and says Abby isn’t home. He says Bonnie looks familiar and she says that Abby is her mom. He introduces himself as Jamie and lets them into the house. He offers them a drink – fresh OJ, coconut water, some mango guava something, the purple stuff, and Sunny Delight! They say no but he gets them water anyway. Bonnie asks Jamie if they’re related and he says that Abby dated his dad and then took him in when his dad bailed on him. Abby walks in and Bonnie introduces herself. There is a painting of two goats on the wall and I really want it. Seriously, can anyone get a screenshot of that?

Back in Mystic Falls, Caroline’s dad is chaining up Tyler to try to “break him from his sire bond.” Caroline’s dad says the only way he can break the bond is by turning into a werewolf again because that’s what Klaus’s sire bond freed him from doing. Tyler starts to turn as Caroline and Caroline’s dad look on.

Abby tells Elena that she was best friends with Elena’s mom, and she is the reason she bailed on Bonnie. 15 years previous a vampire came to town looking for Elena, the doppelganger, nobody could destroy him so Abby lured him out of town and then cast a spell to desiccate him. It was Mikael, Klaus’s father. It took all of Abby’s power, and she ended up losing her magic. Bonnie gets mad and says she should’ve come back, and since she doesn’t have magic powers anymore she can’t help and they should just leave. Abby asks her to stay and Elena says she’s going to wait outside. Elena goes walking outside alone, and Stefan is suddenly there.

Damon shows up to the hospital to talk to Dr. Fell. He introduces himself and says he’s sorry about her ex. Apparently, she is the one who signed the death certificate, but she put the cause of death as an animal attack. She asks why he cares and he says it’s because Alaric likes her, and if she’s a psychopath that’s just way too much work for him. As Damon turns to leave she stabs him in the neck with some kind of syringe, whattacrazybitch. Dr. Fell is drawing blood from Damon’s arm when he starts to wake up – she quickly leaves.

In the mean time, Tyler is wimping out on changing to a werewolf. “My name’s Tyler, turning into a werewolf hurts, wah wah.” That was my impression of him. Caroline asks if he can take a break and Papa Forbes says they’re doing it his way. Caroline leaves, and PF picks up an ax. WTF? He starts to go after Tyler with the ax and says Tyler either needs to turn or he’s going to kill him. Tyler starts to change and rips free from the chains and attacks PF.

Bonnie asks Abby why she didn’t come home. Abby says she had no magic and she was in a new town, so she wanted to start over as a new woman, not as a witch. It turns out Abby didn’t even know that Bonnie’s grams had died. Abby asks why Bonnie was there and Bonnie says she thought her dream was asking her to reach out. Abby says maybe she can still help out with herbs and such.

Stefan is mad at Elena and Elena says she doesn’t care that he found out. He kicks over a chair and Jamie comes out. Elena tells him to go back inside and he says no. Stefan chokes Jamie and compels him to go back inside. Jamie leaves but then comes back with a shotgun and says he’s not supposed to be there. Then he shoots Stefan! Damn. Bonnie hears the noise and as she runs to look out the window Abby pours some powder on her hand and forces it in Bonnie’s nose/mouth.

Damon goes over to Alaric’s house and makes a reference to Fatal Attraction, saying he’s looking around for a bunny, haha. Alaric asks what is problem is, and Damon says Meredith vervained him and then blood jacked him. Alaric asks when he saw her and he says it was when he went to the hospital and accused her of murdering her ex – a sensitive subject apparently. Alaric gets mad and Damon says you’re welcome for proving she’s a psycho case.

Back to Abby’s house out in the middle of nowhere, Jamie is tying up Elena as Stefan writhes on the ground in pain and Abby drags a lifeless-looking Bonnie outside. Jamie helps Abby put Bonnie into a car. Abby goes to see Klaus’ hybrid friend and says Bonnie doesn’t know where the coffins are. Bonnie gets out of the car and Abby says she’ll be fine but the herbs she used on her muted her magic. Abby tells Bonnie she needs to know where the coffins are because otherwise the hybrid compelled Jamie to kill himself. Bonnie says she can’t tell because it goes beyond just the two of them. Abby texts Bonnie to warn her friends.

Back at the house Jamie explains that he doesn’t know why he has a gun or why he shot Stefan, but if Abby doesn’t find the location of some coffins he has to shoot himself. He also says that he’s not supposed to hurt her. She grabs the gun from him and knocks him out, and then goes to help Stefan. Stefan says she needs to pull the buckshot out of him…apparently it’s wooden buckshot? I don’t know. She starts pulling it out and Stefan’s like, “oh, my name is Stefan…this hurts really bad, wah wah.” She tells him to quit his bitchin’ and he says she’s different now; she’s stronger. Elena tells Stefan that she kissed Damon. Stefan doesn’t say anything; he just gets up and walks away.

Damon shows up at the haunted house. The coffins are gone and Klaus is there. Klaus insults the 100 dead witches that live in the haunted house and they start to hurt him, so he says he has no problem tracking down all their descendents and hurting them. He says, in fact, as he speaks his hybrid friend is prepared to end the Bennett line. The witches stop hurting him and reveal the hidden coffins – except for the fourth. Damon says Bonnie gave him the heads up and he moved the fourth coffin.

Alaric goes to the hospital to confront Meredith and Bill Forbes shows up on a gurney. After checking out Bill, Meredith says he was found in the woods and that it was an actual animal attack. She says he won’t make it on his own and gives him some of Damon’s blood. She says she hates it when people die so she cheats to help them out.

Stefan says he shouldn’t have kidnapped her and almost killed her on the bridge, but she shouldn’t have lied to him about going to see Abby. She says she just wanted to help Bonnie and that she didn’t plan on kissing Damon. Stefan says that she’s better than Damon; she’s better than both of them.

Bonnie tells Abby that Elena is on her way to pick her up and that they should all be safe since Klaus usually holds up his end of the bargain. Abby says she wants to help Bonnie, but Bonnie says she can’t because she has no magic and she doesn’t trust her. Burn. Abby says that the longer she was away from Bonnie the more her magic drifted away and asks if maybe Bonnie can help her get her magic back.

Tyler comes to visit Papa Forbes in the hospital and says he’s sorry for mauling him half to death. PF says he knew the risks when he decided to help him. He tells Tyler that he has to turn into a werewolf again the next day and keep turning until it’s painless and he can act on his own free will. Until then he’s not allowed to be around Caroline.

Alaric takes Meredith to his house and tells her that he’s a vampire hunter. She asks how he survived getting hit by a truck and he tells her about his magic ring that protects him from being killed by a supernatural being. Elena walks in as they start making out and it is awwwwwwkwarrrd. Meredith leaves and Alaric apologizes. Elena says it’s okay, and that it’s house too, and that he’s allowed to move on from Jenna.

Stefan shows up at the Salvatore house. Damon tells him he was only able to get the locked coffin out in time, and that he was banking on Abby to get it open, he’s screwed. Damon asks if Elena is okay and Stefan punches him in the face. Damon’s like yeah, I guess you know now, but look I have this cool dagger.

Klaus is back at his house (?) with the coffins and his hybrid friend is like cool we’re done. Someone comes up from behind the hybrid and rips out his heart – it’s Elijah! Woohoo, Damon pulled the stake out of him.
